That’s What passed for an oscar caliber film in the 80’s!?!?! my Jaded and Biased Review of Bugsy
May 30th, 2008 by The GeniusA couple of Weeks ago My Cousin Amber was in town. As is our new tradition, when we get together, we watch a mob film. our choice this time around Bugsy and the God Father Part 2, and yes I could do a review of the god father part two, but in reality what is thee left to be sad about the film.
So the onto my review of Bugsy: What I knew about the the real life mobster was pretty limited at best. I knew that he had ties to Lucky Luciano, and that he was one of the biggest power players of the west coast mafia during the WW2 era. What a knew about the film was just as sparse: it was a film from 1991, it was nominated for a couple of Oscars, it stared Warren Beaty as the title Character and that it was mentioned Billy Crystals Oscar song and dance opening to which after seeing the film I finally get the what he was talking about. And yes I know you are thinking “Wait 1991? Why does your title say 80’s in it?” and the answer is two fold:
1. Pretty much almost everything from 1990 and 1991 still had the major 80’s vibe going on and most of the shift to the 90’s culture didn’t start happening till 92.
2. If you see this film(which I highly do not recommend) or have seen this film recently(in which case I offer my condolences) you’ll know this movie screams 80’s cinema.
So you can probably guess that I didn’t like this film, I’m not really sure where to begin on this, since it was a biopic I figure it will help me know a little more about the person. if you knew nothing about Bugsy from what the movie shows, you find out he was part of the east coast Mafia, was sent to California on a mission for the Mafia (whether they wanted him to stay out there end establish their crime syndicate or if he was supposed to one thing and come back but he decided just to stay out to there even though it would annoy his bosses is unclear), he liked the Hollywood scene and does some crimial stuff there (though they don’t give much detail into what or how powerful he is in the area), he was extremely possessive and paranoid about his girlfriend Virginia Hill, he was a major player in the founding of Las Vegas(or at least turning it into the modern day sin city), and was OCD though I have no idea if this was really true.
while a potentially good movie was wasted behind bad dialog, bad acting and bad directing. by far biggest gripe about the Film was it’s editing…. It Drove me Nuts!!!! between the rapid cutaways that were poorly timed, the poorly placed overlays of people singing and the like, and the fact that the movie just seemed to jump all over the map and had no sense of purpose or direction what so ever was really frustrating, the shoddy editing during the first half of the film left me disoriented and had me scratching my head trying to figure out all of what was going on as if they were trying to fit 3.5 hours of needed content into under 45 min, I’ll be honest after that it had me intrigued and interested for about 10 min, before the editing changed again and it felt like some new editor came in and said lets just drag out this last part for about 30 min longer than it needs to be, and let’s make him like he is certifiably crazy!
iIn the end the movie was plain overly long, frustrating and just plain boring (much like this review) I just can’t belive that this would get any sort of acclaim outside of a razzie or two
